Few fighter pilots began their combat careers with an immediate victory, yet on his very first mission, Bob Stanford-Tuck downed no fewer than three enemy aircraft. This achievement was even more remarkable given the circumstances: it occurred during the early phase of the Second World War, when RAF pilots routinely faced overwhelming odds.

Displaying fearlessness and exceptional skill in the air, Stanford-Tuck amassed an impressive 29 confirmed victories by 1942, before being brought down by ground fire over Northern France.

The scene is vividly captured in Robert Taylor’s print, which portrays Stanford-Tuck’s third victory of that debut day—an Me110 over Dunkirk. Upon viewing the artwork, Stanford-Tuck himself remarked: “The painting is so realistic. That is exactly how I remember the action.”
