Carte Cénérale des Parties Connues du Globle: Mortier 1809

Carte Cénérale des Parties Connues du Globle: Mortier 1809

  • Title: Carte Cénérale des Parties Connues du Globle
  • Author: Pierre Mortier
  • Date: 1809
  • Medium: Hand-colored copperplate engraving
  • Condition: Very Good Plus - on a sturdy wide-margined sheet with bunch of grapes watermark, scattered foxing that is mostly confined to the blank margins, and minor toning.
  • Inches: 18 7/8 x 16 5/8 [Platemark]
  • Centimeters: 47.94 x 42.23 [Platemark]

Surprisingly uncommon version of Pierre Mortier's unique world map; interestingly, it's title has been misspelled - rather than Carte Générale des Parties Connues du Globe, the title reads Carte Cénérale des Parties Connues du Globle. Published by Jacques Desray in the Nouvel Atlas de la Bible, the map shows a very late representation of California as an island. It also depicts the Detroit d'Anian, an apocryphal Northwest Passage to Button's Bay, which is located to the west of Hudson Bay. Five spheres above the map represent Day and Night, the Flood, the phases of the moon, and the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.
